Born and raised near Boston, Karen graduated from the University of New Hampshire and spent a few post-college years in the editorial department of Houghton Mifflin Publishers. Enviously watching the freelance writers come and go on their own schedules and determining early on that she did not have a 9 to 5 personality, she soon struck out on her own.

While living and traveling in Europe for several years, she settled into life as a full-time freelancer and never looked back. Karen went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Binghamton University where she later taught courses in freelance magazine and newspaper writing as a member of the adjunct faculty.

A foodie from the age of three when she is said to have refused squeeze-bottle yellow mustard and demanded Grey Poupon, her writing focuses on upscale travel, food, and wine although she enjoys writing about a variety of other topics.

When she’s not traveling, Karen writes, cooks, runs, and occasionally stumbles about on cross-country skis in a small fishing village in Maine, where she lives with her husband, freelance photographer Nathaniel Hammond.
