--In
a recent national survey, people were asked what career they
would select if they could work at any job. The
number one choice was actor. Close behind was travel
writer. A fling as an extra in Message in a Bottle a
few years ago convinced me that acting is much
less glamorous than it appears, especially when it involves standing
on a dock in April in Maine for 12 hours a day.
Travel
writing can be fun, but it, too, has its moments, not the least of which is having
to chase a story when you'd rather be basking on the beach. Contrary to popular
belief, travel writers rarely stay in five-star hotels or snack on caviar.
On one memorable
writing trip I stayed at a small, comfortable inn that
looked
quite ordinary until I learned that previous visitors claimed a ghost in 19th-
century clothing walked the halls, calling guests
by name. Since I
was there
in the off season and alone in the building, let's just say I got plenty
of
late-night reading done... |
